What Is A Seed Phrase?

24-01-2022

*Don't Buy Cryptocurrencies*

Seed phrase?

A collection of either 12 or 24 words that are mathematically equivalent to a private key.

What is a private key?

A private key is the mathematical "key" that let's someone spend cryptocurrencies.

The same way you need a physical key to open the door to your house, you need a private key to unlock access to your funds for spending. In monero you need a viewing key to recognize when your address has received funds. Both of these keys are represented within the seed phrase.

If you don't own your keys you don't own your coins. If you have to ask for permission from a website to spend your coins you don't own them. If your coins are stored within a website they are not your coins. This concept is a little difficult to wrap your head around at first because with USD it's a little different but this is an axiom of cryptocurrencies.
